The Summer of Self-Love

31/05/2017

back to blog

Whilst many of us are craving the perks of summer; lighter evenings, warmer weather and family holidays, this season can also be one of the toughest times of year on our self-esteem.

Due to the common misconception that there is only one way to look good in a bikini, the summer months can cause people much stress and anxiety that they will be judged for not looking like a super model on the beach.

Although a handful plus size models are becoming better known in the fashion industry, the struggle for the media to represent a range of body types is far from over, and because of this it can be difficult for plus size women to feel comfortable in their own skin.

Here at Yours Clothing, we want to change that! We want you to feel proud of your bodies and be unapologetic for any lumps, bumps, curves or frumps!

Our so-called imperfections are what make us unique and therefore what make us beautiful. Self-love and self-worth are more important than ever this season and it’s important for women to stick together and encourage each other to be body positive. We are all beautiful, and we already look perfect in our bikinis.

We’ve put together a few tips on self-love alongside some style advice to help you feel confident, bold and vibrant this summer.

  1. There’s no need to cover up

We understand that when you’re not feeling confident, the temptation to cover up your body is strong. However, this isn’t practical in the summer months and it won’t help your self-esteem in the long term. Rather than shying away from shorts and skirts, put them on and own them. Some styles may be more flattering than others, but the idea that there is one way that these items should look is a myth. Summer weather is there to be enjoyed by everyone, and you won’t enjoy it in jeans and long sleeves!

  1. Don’t sweat in all black

At some point in our lives, we’ve all been told that black clothes will make you look slimmer whilst white clothes can only be worn by stick thin people. We’re here to tell you to forget about these rules. Black clothes are more likely to make you sweat, whilst white garments will keep you feeling cool and chic. Mix it up and invest in some light-coloured garments for this season.

  1. Be a mermaid

Stripping down to your swimwear takes guts. But you can totally do it. Who says bikinis and bellies don’t mix? If you like it, wear it! And if you’re feeling particularly self-conscious, it’s easy to find swimwear with built in support. Don’t miss out on swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the beach, mermaids come in all shapes and sizes too!

  1. Prints are plus size friendly

Another myth we would like to debunk is that prints are not plus size friendly. We love a bright, eye-catching pattern, especially in the summer! Forget this rule and shop care free. Trend tip: Patterned trousers are the ultimate statement piece for this season, wear with sandals or heels!

  1. Flaunt those fitted garms

When you’re feeling self-conscious about your body, it’s natural to gravitate towards oversized, baggy clothing. However, these styles won’t flatter your figure and will usually make you look larger than you are. Don’t be afraid to go for fitted styles and clingy fabrics. Flaunt those curves and embrace your body shape. You’ll feel way sexier – we promise!

  1. We’re all in this together

Lastly, it’s important to remember that we’re all in this together. Unfortunately, it’s extremely common for people to worry about how they look and suffer with low self-esteem. The way to combat this is to remember that all bodies are beautiful and encourage each other to be positive about the way we look. You don’t have to change to be beautiful, you just have to believe in yourself.

We believe in you! Put these tips into practice and have a fabulous, body positive summer!
