YC Talks: All things retail with Metro Store Manager Louise

back to blog

Blog Cover PhotoAs our store teams start gearing up for a new spring summer season ahead, we thought what better time to catch up with our lovely Metro Manager Louise, to discover her journey with Yours Clothing and what inspires her every day.

Louise – let’s go from the start! Tell us about your journey so far with Yours Clothing:

It all began in October 2012 when I started as the Store Manager of Gateshead. Although I’m not a local girl I’ve always loved working in the MetroCentre – something always pulls me back here.

When I started at Yours seven years ago there were just over 30 stores and I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the company’s expansion and to watch it grow to the 154 stores it is today. After spending 22 years in retail I knew this was a brand that, as a plus size woman who loves fashion, I could really feel passionate about. Yours Clothing had a vision and an exciting future ahead which I wanted to be a part of, after two interviews I was thrilled to be joining the retail team!

Recently I was given the amazing opportunity to assist with our international expansion programme in Germany as we opened our third German store. I spent a week setting up the new store and experiencing retail in a brand new environment. This was invaluable to me and reminded me of how passionate and driven our business is, constantly striving to be the number one plus size retailer in the industry.

What do you love the most about your job role?

It has to be the culture and hands on approach to running the store on a day to day basis, creating an inviting and inspiring environment. The customer is always our number one priority and we’re focused on being able to give each customer a tailored experience. I love clothes, styling and I’m passionate about our product – making it easy to inspire customers.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in retail?

My advice to anyone going in to retail would be to join a brand you feel highly passionate about and that suits your personality, interests and style. Retail can be tough in these times but if you find the right retailer that gives you what you’re looking for you will love it, you only get back what you put into it!

Tell us one YC product that you couldn’t live without?

My most loved Yours Clothing products that I can’t live without are my bras… as we all know if we have a good fitted bra we feel good from inside out. I love our T-shirt bras which give great support and up lift at such a fantastic price. I also find wearing them and having confidence in our bras really helps when advising customers with our bra fit service, I can confidently recommend and advise.

What’s your favourite memory of working at Yours Clothing?

My most memorable time at Yours is being chosen to represent the brand with two other store managers and area manager at the Plus Size Fashion Awards. We won “Best High Street Retailer of 2015”.. of course Jeff Brazier did help in making the evening such a great experience!

If you had a second career option, what would it be?

I actually left school to be a chef! Although after several months in the catering industry I realised it really wasn’t for me and cooking still isn’t if you ask my kids!
I would love to run a bar, restaurant or hotel as I love the fast paced environment to meeting, greeting and creating an enjoyable experience.

If you could tell your younger self one thing about your career, what would it be?

Learn from your failures, turn them into successes and believe in yourself!

What’s the most important skill to have in your job role?

The most important skill to have in my role is openness and honesty.

With our continuously expanding store portfolio, we have a wide range of career opportunities across our retail teams and our dedicated Recruitment department are always happy to hear from you. Check out all available vacancies on our careers page.
